The changing face of Belfast
The growth, re-generation & re-branding of Belfast continues unabated. Its hard to believe that a city and people coming out of thirty years of conflict & destruction could move into the future with such momentum & confidence. Some wondered if they would ever see this day. It feels at times like the troubles happened a thousand years ago, rather than a few short years past, and the violence on the streets has been replaced with a café culture of espresso’s and latte’s. Off-course the scars of the troubles are still visible around the city, in the many murals painted on gable walls or the peace walls that separate the two communities. But even these reminders of the past are helping in the regeneration of the city, with the murals and ‘peacewalls’ being one of the biggest draws for tourists visiting the city. Open topped tourist buses wind their way through the areas in an unending cavalcade to the sound of tourist clicking cameras. One of the best ways for visitors to catch & fell all that the city has to offer, is to try a tour. If you are looking to capture a glimpse of the past and future, its well worth trying a black taxi tour, especially if you are interested in seeing the trouble spots of both Protestant and Catholic West & East Belfast. The murals you’ll see expertly painted on gable ends are a unique expression of communities in crisis & turmoil, and it’s really fascinating to compare the Loyalist Shankill Road murals with the Republican Falls Road ones - same medium, but very different messages and politics. The Taxi Tour will also show you the Peace Lines, designed to keep two communities apart, as well as taking you round some of the famous buildings in the city centre and of course the famous cranes of Harland & Wolff shipyard – birthplace of the Titanic. Be it Black taxi or bus, a tour is a great way to see for the visitor to see for yourself the issues and the energies that have shaped the conflict in Belfast since 1969. Belfast has truly become trendy & this is reflected in the thousands who arrive every weekend from all over Europe to soak up the unique atmosphere of a city reborn. Hotels are reporting almost full occupancy rates and Belfast has managed to tap into the American market, so long the ownership of Dublin. The Belfast skyline is still dominated by the hills that surround the city, but it is also now being filled with huge cranes, as the city’s rebirth gathers momentum and the hotels and trendy apartment blocks rise from the ashes of our troubled past. So if its history, architecture, scenery or a good pint of Guinness – Belfast has it all. Belfast business directory - CityLocal Belfast CityLocal Belfast
